Rhythm and sound are in everything, from a beating heart, a dripping tap, and the tram rattling down the tracks. It is physical, coming from a place deep within and from the earth on which we stand. Essence is a series of abstracted portraits of local musicians celebrating the physicality of rhythm, energy and emotion through the materiality of film. It explores the intangible elements of the creative process and their relationship with enduring artistic footprints.
Best known for her work as a live music photographer, Melbourne photographer Zo Damage has been published in print and online for two decades. In 2017 Zo was presented with The Age Music Victoria Awards ‘Outstanding Achievement Award’ for her 365 Day Live Music Photography Project and book The Damage Report. In 2018, Melbourne Lord Mayor Sally Capp presented Zo with the QVM Trader Awards ‘Services to the Community Award’. Zo’s work is in the collections of The Australian Music Vault and The Amplifier at Arts Centre Melbourne, State Library Victoria and private collections worldwide. Zo is currently completing a Master of Photography at RMIT University.
