Michael Jalaru Torres (AUS) /

As a Djugun and Yawuru Man with tribal connections to the Jabirr Jabirr and Gooniyandi people, Michael Jalaru Torres draws inspiration from the unique landscapes and people of the Kimberley region. His photography poems seek to illuminate Australia’s dark history and modern day issues that shape communities, both remote and urban.

Through organic and evolving storytelling, he invites viewers to consider their attitudes and viewpoints and to seek truth in their own way, while providing a portal into the imagination that allows for connection to Country and culture. In 2022 Torres founded Blak Lens, a collective of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island photographers and videographers formed to support and amplify First Nations voices, talent, culture, and stories across the photography industry.
