Model Citizens

Laurie Brackley

Model Citizens is 25 portraits of models from modelling agencies in Sydney in the early 90’s.

Grunge/glam Sydney lent itself perfectly to portraiture with its gritty lanes, industrial inner West and its yet undeveloped outer West.

Model citizens captures the hedonistic gendered sensuality of the 90’s. It embodies itself into the 1990’s anthem of emboldened sexuality of youth.

Influenced by Herb Ritz and Robert Maplethorpe, both giants of the genre, who passed of AIDS during the HIV epidemic.

Biography
Born in Rochford, England in 1961. My family sailed to Australia in 1969. I spent my adolescent years in Frankston, Victoria. Through the 80’s and 90’s I resided in central Sydney, where I chanced upon a photographic assistants job at Fitzroy Place Studios, Surry Hills. From there and over the next decade I worked as a commercial photographer.
