Lesley’s exhibition draws from the Japanese aesthetic of Wabi Sabi, embracing the imperfection and fleeting nature of the natural world. Using locally gathered flowers, predominantly unassuming and humble, the still life images showcase beauty in the ordinary. By the use of technical elements such as asymmetry and irregularity the hidden beauty and magic that resides within the ordinary and seemingly unremarkable is revealed.
Lesley Bretherton, a Melbourne-based photographer and former clinical psychologist, specialises in landscapes and still-life botanicals. With a mastery of both natural light and a light pad, she captures the essence of the intricate details of botanical subjects, blending artistry and technique to create watercolour-like ethereal, pastel images.
