Psychopomp (Greek for ‘soul guide’) continues Sam Lloyd’s fascination with loss, transience and decay, exploring the phenomenon of the cemetery angel. Between 1880 and 1900 angels proliferated in Victorian cemeteries, as the flamboyant and wealthy gold-rush generation came to its end. Works of great beauty, carved by skilled copiers in Carrara, Italy, the poignancy of these sculptures grows over time as they succumb to the impact of weather, pollution, and biological invasion.
Sam Lloyd is a multi-disciplinary artist based in Melbourne, where he lives with his two daughters and three cats. When not wandering around cemeteries, he generally tries to be as alive as possible.
