The 12th century Angkor complex has been revealed from dense jungle since the 1960’s. During the Pol Pot era, the complex was vandalised and looted. Restoration is being undermined due to damage associated with mass tourism, vandalism, theft and pollution.
Michael Knowles is a keen photographer who, as part of his professional engineering career, has had many images included in technical publications issued by the UN and other international organisations. When working in Cambodia during 1994 he had the opportunity to spend many months photographing the bass reliefs of the Angkor complex prior to degradation resulting from pollution, theft, and corruption. Many of the images displayed no longer exist today.
