Fascinated by an anonymous woman who posed for Eadweard Muybridge’s camera in 1885, Mariken Wessels’ series Nude – Arising From the Ground (2018-2020) transcends the viewer into a mystique world of movement and exploration of the human body. Inspired by the anonymous woman, who was supposedly named Miss Cox, Wessels began photographing obese female models underwater.
Wessels’ artistic practice moves between photography, sculpture, film and archive. The artist reimagines existing narratives and constructs new ones within the boundaries of public and private spheres. The singular work, Model-Stop-Motion I, holds a mythological quality, discovering beauty and elegance as the nude body becomes a landscape shaped by the water.
