Bruno Benini (1925-2001) was one of Australia’s foremost fashion photographers of the 20th century. Part of a group of renowned émigré photographers including Henry Talbot and Helmut Newton among others, Benini captured the changing nature of Australian style, from 1950s couture to the athletic wear of the 1980s and early 90s, in enticing and sophisticated images.

After immigrating to Australia from Italy in 1935, Benini originally studied science at Melbourne Technical College (RMIT University), but after returning to Italy via London decided to pursue photography. Upon return to Melbourne he began working at Peter Fox Studios at Collins Street, Melbourne, before later establishing his own studio in the mid-1950s.

Together, Benini and his wife Hazel, whom he married in 1962, captured the adventurous and sometimes surreal images of Australian fashion. The photographs were frequently included in magazines and newspapers, such as, the Sydney Morning Herald and the Sun Herald, as well used for publicity by local fashion houses, making it a successful creative and commercial partnership.

Benini’s work is held by the National Gallery of Victoria and in 2009 the Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences (MAAS), Sydney acquired the entirety of Benini’s archive with assistance from the National Cultural Heritage Account. In 2010-11 the MAAS staged a major retrospective of his work and creative processes titled Creating the Look: Benini and Fashion Photography. His work was also exhibited in Bruno Benini: Fashion Images 1956-1976, RMIT Gallery during Melbourne Fashion Week 1999 and has been featured in numerous other exhibitions on photography and fashion including Inspired: Design Across Time, Powerhouse Museum, 2005 and the NGV International: 50th Anniversary exhibitions.
