Mass Isolation Australia was created in the midst of lockdown in March 2020 to establish a visual record of the pandemic and quickly became a way to see the pandemic unfold through Australian eyes, and a source of connection and community in a time of social distance. More than 12,000 images were uploaded to the #MassIsolationAus Instagram project from photographers across rural, regional and metropolitan Australia. Curated by Shaohui Kwok and Amelia Saward in 2020, this exhibition reflects upon a truly unique period in our history, inviting viewers to find lightness and shared humanity in our experiences of isolation.
Alongside this exhibition, we have included an indoor exhibition of students’ works from the Mass Isolation Education Program. Created with street photographer Jesse Marlow, this project inspired over 1,400 students from 48 schools through in-classroom and remote online learning to creatively document their own experience of isolation. Exhibiting schools: Carey Baptist Grammar School, Healesville High School, Marist-Sion College, Matthew Flinders Girls Secondary College, Mount Rowan Secondary College, St Monica’s College, and Swinburne Senior Secondary College.
