James Valentine OAM, Ballarat International Foto Biennale Ambassador 2019-2026

We sadly acknowledge the passing of James Valentine OAM, Ballarat International Foto Biennale ambassador from 2019 – 2026, beloved ABC radio presenter, musician, performer, and proud Ballarat local.

James grew up in Ballarat, a place that helped shape his lifelong curiosity, wit, and creative spirit. He went on to become one of Australia’s most recognisable cultural voices, known for his work with ABC Radio, where he brought warmth and a distinctive sense of humour to audiences.

Beyond radio, James was a gifted musician and performer, a member of bands including Models, and someone who moved effortlessly between art forms. That breadth of creativity made him a natural advocate for photography and for festivals like ours that celebrate storytelling in all its forms.

As an ambassador for the Biennale, James gave his time and voice generously. He believed in the importance of regional cultural life and understood that places like Ballarat are not on the margins, but at the heart of Australia’s creative identity.

He had a gift for connection, with artists and with community.

We are honoured to have had him alongside us, and we hold his legacy of creativity and care with deep gratitude.

He will be warmly remembered.
