Cyanotypes by Pleasant Street Primary School

Students at Pleasant Street Primary School

This digital exhibition presents cyanotypes created by students from Pleasant Street Primary School during an incursion with the Ballarat International Foto Biennale in 2024.

Cyanotypes, one of the earliest photographic printing processes, were developed in the 1840s and is renowned for its vivid blue tone. By placing objects directly onto sensitised paper and exposing them to sunlight, participants produce unique photograms that explore the relationship between light and shadow.

In this project, students engaged with both the history and materiality of photography through hands-on experimentation. Their works capture both the immediacy of process and its serendipity.

Cyanotypes by Pleasant Street Primary School is presented as a digital exhibition on the screen in the Atrium at Ballarat Library. Screenings are not scheduled. If the exhibition is not on display when you visit, please let library staff know that you’d like to view it.

With special thanks to Danielle Murray and Peter Laqua.
