The conversation begins with a simple question… can I put you in a tree? The answer is almost always yes! What follows is an excited flurry of ideas, stories about favourite trees and famous trees and potential locations. Connections are made, friendships begin. Adventures are plotted.
Initially inspired by photography collector Jochen Raiss’s beautiful books of found vintage photographs the Women In Trees project started with a whimsical idea that quickly developed into something really special. It turns out inviting women and non-binary people to sit in a tree is an invitation to slow down, to reflect, to daydream, to tell stories and to play.
I work with minimal equipment preferring instead to de-centre the camera and prioritise the shared moment. Allowing the chemistry of the light and the mood to drive the session heightens the collaborative nature of the experience.
It is my intention to continue this project for the rest of my creative life exploring joy, nature, womanhood, aging and the changing notions of a woman’s place.
So… can I put you in a tree?
