Using infrared street photography, I have created an eerie cinematic aesthetic that highlights the blurring lines between the internet and the ‘real world’. Infrared light is a wavelength of light that is just outside the visible spectrum, but humans can perceive it instead as heat. The unseen worlds, both virtual and physical, have a massive influence on our lives.
There have been a few media revolutions in human history but this most recent one, the internet, doesn’t have a physical form. I feel like things are reaching a melting point. This current media revolution is on track to repeat history as it had done with the printing press and the radio. The press gave Martin Luther the ability to reshape public perception and decentralise power, much like social media today. The rise of broadcast media in the 20th century played a crucial role in both Roosevelt’s fireside chats and Hitler’s propaganda machine, echoing how the internet now fuels both connection and division.
