The ’New Light’ collection of images are observations of ambient light in the natural environment. Exposures recorded on medium format film and SX-70 polaroid aim to document the quality and colour of light but also the quality of the feeling experienced: an inner calm and a nostalgia for a quieter time. The images taken along the Great Ocean Road and in the Central Goldfields seek to capture the serenity of the location and invite audiences to also look inward for a similar feeling of stillness.
“I am looking to find peace and inspiration by being in the natural environment, and hope to convey the calm I feel though my subject matter in my images.” Inspiration is found in the work of artists such as Mark Rothko and James Turrell, while the treatment of both the infinite and disappearing horizon evoke Hiroshi Sugimoto’s seascapes.
