Portraiture is a collaboration between the photographer and the subject, both bringing equal shares to the final image.

This collection of personal work is a mix of friends and family (mainly) who I have been photographing for years, some decades.

I love how over time, their portraits have become more theatrical and the navigation to photographing the moment is almost silent and unassuming. They do what they want to do and I help guide the light and composition to suit the personalty.

Humans are fascinating. I am always surprised and grateful for the generous personalities that come out in each portrait.

Biography

Catherine Black is a Narrm / Melbourne photographer who has exhibited in various group shows in Dublin, New York and Australia. These images were selected and exhibited as finalists of The Percival Photographic Portrait Prize 2024 and the Martin Kantor Portrait Prize 2023.
