The Fineman New Photography Award Exhibition 2019

The Ballarat International Foto Biennale presented its first The Fineman New Photography Award in 2019. This award places the focus on photographic artists working throughout the Asia-Pacific region; seeking to find those whose work is beginning to receive critical attention and deserves to be seen by international audiences.

Six artists were selected as finalists by judges Peggy Sue Amison (Artistic Director, East Wing Qatar), Jagdip Jagpal (Director, India Art Fair), Natalie King OAM (Curator and Arts Leader), Gwen Lee (Director, Singapore International Photography Festival), Celina Lunsford (Artistic Director, Fotografie Forum Frankfurt), Jim Ramer (Parsons School of Design New York City), and Fiona Sweet (Director, Ballarat International Foto Biennale). The AUD $10,000 prize was awarded by the judges to Yichen Zhou for her series Daily Talk. Below is their collective statement:

“We were delighted with the humor in Yichen Zhou’s dada-like performative series, Daily Talk, which plays with a truly surreal mix of reality and fiction. Yichen Zhou’s vision reflects the contemplation and questioning of a young generation attempting to understand ancient traditions within a surreal 21st century framework. The jury felt unanimously that Daily Talk embodies the spirit of The Fineman New Photography Award. Yichen Zhou is a talented new voice whose work needs to be taken to the next level and seen by international audiences.”

Proudly supported by Alane Fineman.
