Familial discusses the relationship between an unfamiliar space and the artist, questioning the way in which labels can affirm or alter our perspective of place. Capturing the forgotten spaces in public and private realms of Emirati society, Lamya Gargash documents budget hotels in Dubai that have been overshadowed by polished and commercialised establishments.
In doing so, Gargash examines the idea of space – drawing parallels between a one-star hotel room and what could also be seen as someone’s personal bedroom. She inserts her own, personal family portraits onto the bedside tables, attempting to further break down the barrier between hotel room and bedroom. Creating a sense of intimacy, it is a reminder of the human narratives that unfold in these buildings.
