This work is an abstract exploration of inner-city streets of Melbourne, celebrating the elaborate detail and cultural aesthetic. Collecting traces of humanity represented through the absence of the human form, whose presence emerges through the subject matter. A central theme is exploring the space between figurative and abstract forms. Where the elements of the image are recognisable, but they are presented in ways that suspend them from their location. The aim is to engage with the abstract forms inherent in the everyday, but not lose the connection with the context and environment in which they exist.
Grant Ellmers studied photography at the Canberra School of Art, ANU, and currently teaches photography at the University of Wollongong. He works primarily in black and white.
